The Post-Sedan phase of the war saw the transition of France from an Empire led by Napoleon III into a Republic run by an interim wartime government. Gone was the large professional army, most either captured or surrounded at Metz. Now the primary fighting force of France was the motivated but poorly trained mass levy that sounded the call against Germany.
